Is Madrid safe?

General safety

Very safe for violent crime. The main risk is pickpocketing in tourist areas (Puerta del Sol, Gran Vía, the metro) — keep your bag zipped and in front, especially in crowds.

Solo female travellers

A comfortable, lively solo-female city where late nights out are normal and social. Keep usual pickpocket awareness and standard night sense around the busiest nightlife and you’ll enjoy it freely.

LGBTQ+ travellers

Legal and very welcoming, with marriage equality since 2005 and a famous scene in Chueca. One of Europe’s most LGBTQ-friendly cities.

Madrid FAQs

Is Madrid safe for solo female travellers?

Yes — personal safety is high and late nights out are part of the culture. The main thing to manage is pickpockets in tourist crowds and on the metro; keep your bag zipped and close.

Why does Madrid eat and go out so late?

It’s the local rhythm — dinner often starts at 9–10pm and nightlife runs very late. Lean into it: a long afternoon break and a late evening is the Madrid way.

How many days do you need in Madrid?

Three days covers the art, parks and plazas, with a fourth ideal for a day trip to Toledo or Segovia.
