The walled “City of Three Cultures” above the Tagus
Toledo is a honey-coloured medieval city set on a hill within a loop of the Tagus river, an easy day trip from Madrid and one of Spain’s most spectacular old towns. Its UNESCO-listed centre is a maze of Christian, Jewish and Muslim heritage — the “City of Three Cultures” — crowned by a vast cathedral and the home of the painter El Greco.

Explore the walled old town
The whole hilltop city is the sight: a tangle of stepped lanes, churches, synagogues and a mighty Gothic cathedral, best explored slowly on foot. A guided walking tour unlocks the layered Christian, Jewish and Muslim history you’d otherwise walk straight past.
