Is Athens safe?
General safety
Generally safe for visitors, with violent crime rare. The realistic risks are pickpockets on the metro and around Monastiraki/Omonia, and some run-down areas best avoided late at night.
Solo female travellers
A manageable and popular solo-female city. Keep usual pickpocket guard on the metro, avoid the area around Omonia Square late at night, and you’ll explore the centre comfortably.
LGBTQ+ travellers
Legal and increasingly welcoming — Greece legalised same-sex marriage in 2024 and Athens has a growing scene around Gazi. More conservative outside the city and islands.
Safety guidance is general and can change — always check your government’s latest travel advice before you go.

Getting around & essentials
The metro is clean, cheap and links the airport, port and centre; the historic core is walkable. From the airport, the metro, the X95 bus or a pre-booked transfer all work; watch bags on the airport metro line for pickpockets.
