Whitewashed cliffs, blue domes and the world’s best sunset

A favourite for honeymoons

Santorini is the caldera island — white villages perched on volcanic cliffs above a flooded crater, famous for its Oia sunsets, blue-domed churches and dramatic black-sand beaches. It’s Greece’s honeymoon icon. Three days is plenty; reach it by a short flight or ferry from Athens.

The honeymoon icon of Greece — caldera-view suites, sunset cruises and the blue domes of Oia.

Sunset over the caldera in Oia

The Oia sunset is a bucket-list moment — and mobbed. Stake out a spot well ahead, or skip the crush entirely with a catamaran cruise that watches it from the water, with dinner and a swim.

How to get to Santorini

Fly from Athens (~45 min) or take the ferry (high-speed ~5h, regular ~8h). Book flights and ferries well ahead in summer — Santorini is one of Greece’s busiest islands.

Best time to visit

May–June and September–October: warm, calmer and cheaper than the July–August peak, when Oia is shoulder-to-shoulder and prices soar.

Santorini tips

  • Book a caldera-view hotel and the sunset cruise early — both sell out and define the trip.
  • Get to Oia well before sunset for a spot, or watch from a boat to skip the crush.
  • The island is bigger and hillier than it looks — rent an ATV/car or pre-book transfers.
