Things to do in Amalfi Coast

Cliff-hanging pastel villages, lemon groves and turquoise sea

A favourite for honeymoons

The Amalfi Coast is a string of pastel villages — Positano, Amalfi, Ravello — tumbling down the cliffs to the Tyrrhenian Sea, linked by a vertiginous coast road and summer ferries. Most people base in Positano, Amalfi or nearby Sorrento for three or four days. It’s reached via Naples rather than Rome directly, and it’s one of Italy’s most romantic stretches of coast.

Positano sunsets, clifftop dinners and private boat days — one of Italy’s classic romantic escapes.

Don’t miss

A boat day along the coastline

The coast is at its most beautiful from the water — a private or shared boat past Positano’s stacked cliffs, into hidden coves for a swim, and out to Capri. Book ahead in summer; the best skippers sell out.

How to get to Amalfi Coast

From Rome, take the high-speed train to Naples (~1h10), then the Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento or a transfer/ferry on to Positano and Amalfi. In summer, ferries link the coastal towns and beat the gridlocked coast road.

Best time to visit

May–June and September: warm sea, long days and lighter crowds. July–August is hot, packed and expensive; in winter many hotels and ferries shut down.

Amalfi Coast tips

  • Base in one town and day-trip by ferry — the coast road is slow and parking is a nightmare.
  • Book Positano/Capri boat trips and popular restaurants well ahead in peak season.
  • Pack flat shoes: every village is built on steep steps.
