3 Days in Rome: The Perfect Itinerary
Three days is the sweet spot for first-time Rome — enough for ancient Rome, the Vatican and the baroque centre without rushing. This plan groups sights by area so you walk, not zig-zag, and books the big two ahead to skip the queues.
Best for: First-timers, couples and culture-lovers wanting the icons at a walkable pace.

Day 1: Ancient Rome
Based around Colosseum & the Forum
Morning
Start early at the Colosseum (book a timed ticket), then walk straight into the Roman Forum next door.
Afternoon
Climb Palatine Hill (same ticket) for the views, then Capitoline Hill and Piazza Venezia, all within a few minutes’ walk.
Evening
Cross the river to Trastevere for dinner — cobbled lanes and Rome’s best trattoria atmosphere.
Day 2: Vatican City
Based around Vatican & Prati
Morning
Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel first thing (book the earliest slot — it’s the single best queue-saver in Rome).
Afternoon
St Peter’s Basilica and the square, then climb the dome for the view over the city.
Evening
Walk to Castel Sant’Angelo at golden hour, then dinner around Piazza Navona.
Day 3: Baroque Rome
Based around Centro Storico
Morning
A walking loop of the centre: Trevi Fountain (go early for fewer crowds), the Pantheon, and Piazza Navona — all minutes apart.
Afternoon
Spanish Steps and a wander, then the Borghese Gallery (book ahead) and its gardens for green time.
Evening
Aperitivo and a final long Roman dinner in the centro storico.
Rome itinerary tips
- Book the Colosseum and Vatican Museums online days ahead — skip-the-line tickets save hours.
- The historic centre is best on foot; wear proper shoes for the cobbles.
- Carry a refillable bottle — Rome’s street fountains (nasoni) run cold, clean water.
