Solo female safety

Rome is a comfortable, well-trodden solo-female city. Violent crime is rare and you can enjoy the centre freely day and night. Expect some friendly (occasionally persistent) male attention, and keep your pickpocket guard up in crowds — beyond that, solo women rarely have any trouble here.

Is it safe at night?

The historic centre, Trastevere and Monti are lively and safe in the evening. The area immediately around Termini station is fine but feels rougher late at night — take a taxi or stay aware if you arrive after dark. Otherwise, walking the central streets at night is normal and pleasant.

Getting around safely

The historic centre is best on foot. Pickpockets concentrate on the metro and crowded buses — the 64 and 40 to the Vatican are notorious. Keep your bag zipped and in front of you. From Fiumicino airport, take the fixed-fare official taxi (one set price to the centre) or the Leonardo Express train, never an unofficial driver who approaches you.

Safest areas to stay

  • Centro Storico (Pantheon / Navona)
  • Trastevere
  • Monti
  • Prati (near the Vatican)
  • Parioli

Where to take extra care

  • Termini station surroundings after dark — normal late-night caution
  • Crowded buses 64 & 40 and the metro — pickpocketing

Common scams & how to avoid them

Friendship bracelet / rose

Someone ties a bracelet on your wrist or hands you a rose, then demands money. Don’t let anyone put anything in your hand near major sites.

Fake petition

A group (often near the Colosseum) asks you to sign a petition to distract you while an accomplice picks your pocket. Keep walking and hold your bag.

Airport taxi overcharge

Drivers ignore the fixed Fiumicino-to-centre fare. Use only the official white taxi rank and confirm the set price, or take the Leonardo Express.

What to wear & cultural notes

Cover your shoulders and knees to enter St Peter’s, the Vatican Museums and churches — carry a light scarf. Otherwise dress as you like; Rome is stylish but relaxed, and there is nothing to manage culturally beyond church dress codes.

LGBTQ+ safety

Legal and generally tolerant, with a scene around the Colosseum’s "Gay Street". Italy is more socially conservative than Northern Europe and recognises civil unions rather than marriage, but LGBTQ+ travellers are rarely troubled in Rome.

Legal status: legal. Same-sex civil unions recognised since 2016. Same-sex marriage not yet legal as of 2025. Milan and Rome have LGBTQ+ communities. More conservative in rural areas and the south.Source: ILGA World 2025
