Centuries-old monasteries atop soaring rock pillars
Meteora is a cluster of monasteries perched impossibly on top of giant sandstone pillars rising from the plain — one of Greece’s most jaw-dropping sights and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Six monasteries are still active and open to visitors. It’s a day or an overnight from the town of Kalambaka, reachable by direct train from Athens.

Meteora tips

- Each monastery closes on a different day of the week — check before planning your route.
- A car or guided tour helps; the monasteries are spread along a winding road.
