Is Sydney safe?
General safety
A very safe major city; violent crime against tourists is rare. Practical risks are sun and surf (swim between the flags), and standard care with belongings in nightlife areas late at night.
Solo female travellers
Very comfortable for solo women, day and night, with a relaxed culture. Use normal city awareness late around nightlife strips like Kings Cross and you’ll explore freely.
LGBTQ+ travellers
Legal and exceptionally welcoming, with marriage equality since 2017 and a world-famous scene around Oxford Street (home of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras). Among the most LGBTQ-friendly cities anywhere.
Safety guidance is general and can change — always check your government’s latest travel advice before you go.

Plan my trip — freeSydney FAQs
Is Sydney safe for solo female travellers?
Yes — it’s a very safe, relaxed city that’s comfortable solo day and night. Swim between the flags at the beach, use normal care around late-night nightlife, and you’ll have an easy trip.
What does "swim between the flags" mean?
On patrolled Australian beaches, lifeguards set red-and-yellow flags marking the safest area to swim, away from dangerous rips. Always swim between them — it’s the single most important beach-safety rule.
How many days do you need in Sydney?
Three to four days covers the harbour, beaches and coastal walks, with room for a Blue Mountains day trip.
