Kyoto Travel Guide

Golden temples, geisha lanes, and old-Japan calm in every direction.

Kyoto is Japan’s soul — over a thousand temples and shrines, raked gardens, geisha districts and bamboo groves, all serenely calm and beautifully preserved. Safe, gentle and deeply atmospheric, it is the perfect counterpoint to Tokyo for solo travellers, couples and families.

Is Kyoto safe?

General safety

Extremely safe, like the rest of Japan — negligible crime, day or night. The only real “risk” is crowds at the famous temples in peak season, so start early.

Solo female travellers

Outstanding for solo women — among the safest places in the world to walk alone at night. Ordinary awareness is all you need.

LGBTQ+ travellers

Legal and quietly tolerant; Kyoto is more traditional and low-key than Tokyo, with attitudes that lean private. Same-sex marriage is not yet recognised nationally.
