How to get to Nara
From Kyoto it’s ~45 min by direct train (Kintetsu or JR); from Osaka, about the same. Everything clusters in walkable Nara Park, a few minutes from the station.
Best time to visit
Spring and autumn for mild weather and colour. The deer are there year-round; mornings are calmer before the day-trippers arrive.
Nara tips
- The deer are wild — bow and they may bow back, but they’ll nip for crackers; keep maps and tickets tucked away.
- Go early to see Tōdai-ji before the tour groups, then wander Naramachi.
- Easily combined with Kyoto or Osaka in a single day.
