Things to do in Mount Fuji

Japan’s sacred snow-capped icon and the Fuji Five Lakes

Mount Fuji, Japan’s highest peak and most sacred mountain, rises in a near-perfect cone southwest of Tokyo. Most people don’t climb it — they admire it from the Fuji Five Lakes (Kawaguchiko) or Hakone, with pagodas, lakes and hot springs framing the view. A day trip or overnight from Tokyo.

The classic pagoda-and-Fuji view

The view of Fuji behind the Chureito Pagoda is the postcard shot — best in clear morning light, or with cherry blossom or autumn colour. Fuji is shy, so clear views are far likelier in the colder months.

Best time to visit

Autumn and winter for the clearest views (the summit is most often visible Nov–Feb). Cherry blossom (April) and autumn colour (Nov) frame it beautifully. Climbing season is July to early September only.

Mount Fuji tips

  • Fuji often hides behind cloud — go on a clear forecast, and earlier in the day gives the best odds.
  • Only climb in the official July–September season; off-season the trails are dangerous and the huts closed.
  • An overnight near Kawaguchiko or in Hakone hugely improves your chance of a clear view.
