Chiang Mai Travel Guide
Temple-dotted old town, mountain air, and the digital-nomad capital of Asia.
Chiang Mai is Thailand’s laid-back north — a moated old town packed with temples, misty mountains and waterfalls beyond, and an ethical elephant-sanctuary scene. Cheap, friendly and famously nomad-friendly, it suits solo travellers, slow-travellers and remote workers.

Is Chiang Mai safe?
General safety
Very safe and relaxed, with low crime. The main concerns are road safety on scooters (wear a helmet, ride cautiously) and seasonal air quality in March–April; otherwise it is wonderfully easy.
Solo female travellers
One of Asia’s easiest and friendliest solo-female bases — a big, supportive traveller and nomad community. Normal night awareness and sensible scooter caution are all that’s needed.
LGBTQ+ travellers
Welcoming and relaxed, in line with Thailand’s LGBTQ-friendly culture; the country passed marriage equality in 2025. Low-key but open.
Safety guidance is general and can change — always check your government’s latest travel advice before you go.

Getting around & essentials
The walkable old town is best on foot; red songthaew shared trucks and ride-hailing apps cover longer hops. Many rent a scooter — only if confident and helmeted. A pre-booked transfer from the airport is quick and cheap.

Is Chiang Mai safe for solo female travellers?
Yes — it is one of the easiest, friendliest solo-female and nomad bases in Asia, with a big supportive community. Use normal night awareness and be cautious if you rent a scooter.
When is the “burning season” in Chiang Mai?
Roughly March–April, when agricultural burning causes heavy smoke haze and poor air quality. If you’re sensitive to air pollution, visit November–February instead.
Why is Chiang Mai popular with digital nomads?
Low cost of living, fast wifi, endless cafés, a big remote-work community and easy visas make it one of the world’s top nomad hubs.
