Marrakesh Travel Guide
Labyrinthine souks, riad courtyards, and the gateway to the Atlas and Sahara.
Marrakesh is a feast for the senses — a maze-like medina of souks and hidden riads, a hypnotic main square, and the Atlas Mountains and Sahara within reach. Vivid, ancient and great value, it is an adventurous culture trip best approached with an open, street-wise mindset.

Is Marrakesh safe?
General safety
Generally safe for violent crime, but the medina is intense: expect persistent touts, “helpful” strangers who lead you the wrong way for a tip, and firm haggling. Be politely firm, agree prices and taxi fares up front, and keep valuables secure in crowds.
Solo female travellers
Doable solo but more challenging — street harassment and unwanted attention are common. Dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees), project confidence, avoid the medina alone after dark, and consider a riad that arranges trusted guides and transfers.
LGBTQ+ travellers
Important to know before you go: same-sex relations are illegal in Morocco. There is no scene or legal recognition, and public displays of affection carry real risk. LGBTQ+ travellers visit discreetly; always check your government’s current travel advice.
Safety guidance is general and can change — always check your government’s latest travel advice before you go.

Getting around & essentials
The medina is walkable but disorienting — accept getting lost, and note your riad’s location. Use petits taxis (insist on the meter or agree a fare) and pre-book airport transfers and Atlas/desert excursions through your riad.

Is Marrakesh safe for solo female travellers?
It’s doable but one of the more challenging solo-female destinations — street harassment is common. Dress modestly, stay confident, avoid the medina alone after dark, and book a riad that arranges trusted guides and transfers.
How do I handle the souk touts and haggling?
Be politely firm — a smile and a clear “no, thank you” works. Agree any price or taxi fare before you commit, and ignore strangers who insist a route is “closed” and offer to lead you.
How many days do you need in Marrakesh?
Three days for the medina, palaces and gardens, plus a day trip to the Atlas Mountains or the desert.
