Berlin is raw, creative and endlessly open — Cold War history, world-class museums, leafy canals and a legendary, anything-goes nightlife. Affordable for a capital and proudly diverse, it’s a brilliant city for solo travellers, creatives and the LGBTQ+ community.

Is Berlin safe?
General safety
A safe major city; violent crime against tourists is rare. Watch for pickpockets around Alexanderplatz, transport hubs and busy markets, and use normal care in nightlife areas late at night.
Solo female travellers
Very comfortable for solo women, day and night, with a relaxed and open culture. Standard city awareness on quiet U-Bahn platforms late at night is all that’s needed.
LGBTQ+ travellers
Legal and exceptionally welcoming, with marriage equality since 2017 and one of the world’s great LGBTQ+ scenes around Schöneberg and beyond. Among the most accepting cities anywhere.
Safety guidance is general and can change — always check your government’s latest travel advice before you go.

Getting around & essentials
The U-Bahn, S-Bahn, trams and buses are excellent — buy a day ticket and ride it all. The centre is flat and very cyclable. From BER airport, the train or a pre-booked transfer is easy.
