Things to do in Chefchaouen

Morocco’s dreamlike blue-washed mountain town

Chefchaouen — the “Blue Pearl” — is a mountain town in northern Morocco where almost every wall, step and doorway is painted in shades of blue. Tucked into the Rif Mountains, its photogenic medina, relaxed pace and cooler air make it a favourite escape, usually reached from Fes or Tangier, or on a longer loop from Marrakesh.

How to get to Chefchaouen

Chefchaouen is in the far north — about 2 hours from Tangier and 4 hours from Fes (the usual day-trip and bus bases). It’s a long way from Marrakesh, so from there it’s best as part of a multi-day northern tour rather than a day trip.

Chefchaouen tips

  • Stay overnight — the medina is magical (and crowd-free) in the early morning light for photos.
  • It’s far north: reach it from Fes or Tangier rather than as a day trip from Marrakesh.
  • Dress modestly as in the rest of Morocco, and always ask before photographing locals.
