Snow-white travertine terraces over an ancient spa city
Pamukkale — “cotton castle” in Turkish — is a hillside of dazzling white travertine terraces filled with warm, mineral-blue water, sitting beneath the ruins of the Roman spa city of Hierapolis. It’s a half- to full-day sight, often visited as a day trip or an overnight on the way between Istanbul and the coast.

Walk the travertine terraces barefoot
You walk up the white calcium terraces barefoot (shoes are banned to protect them), paddling through the warm pools as you climb. Go early morning or late afternoon for soft light, fewer crowds and cooler stone underfoot.

How to get to Pamukkale
Fly from Istanbul to Denizli (DNZ), ~1h, then a 40-minute drive to Pamukkale village. Many travellers visit on a long day trip, but staying overnight in the village lets you hit the terraces at opening before the tour buses.
Best time to visit
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) for comfortable temperatures. Summer is very hot on the exposed white stone; visit at opening or near closing.
Pamukkale tips
- Shoes off on the terraces — carry them and bring a small towel; the walk is wet.
- Enter from the south gate to walk down through Hierapolis to the terraces, or the lower gate to climb up — going early beats both the heat and the crowds.
- Bring swimwear if you want to swim in Cleopatra’s Pool (separate ticket).
