Istanbul Travel Guide
Where Europe meets Asia — empires, bazaars, and the Bosphorus between.
Istanbul straddles two continents and several empires — Byzantine domes, Ottoman palaces, labyrinthine bazaars and the Bosphorus shimmering through it all. Atmospheric, hospitable and great value, it is an unforgettable culture trip for couples, friends and curious solo travellers.

Is Istanbul safe?
General safety
Generally safe for tourists, with violent crime rare. Main annoyances are persistent touts, taxi overcharging and occasional scams (the “friendly” bar invitation) — agree fares, use the metered apps, and politely decline pushy approaches.
Solo female travellers
Manageable and rewarding solo, though more attention and street comments are common than in Western Europe. Dress a little more modestly, project confidence, use ride-hailing at night, and stick to busy areas after dark.
LGBTQ+ travellers
Same-sex relations are legal, and there is an underground scene, but Türkiye is socially conservative, Pride events have been restricted, and attitudes vary. Discretion is advised, especially with public displays of affection.
Safety guidance is general and can change — always check your government’s latest travel advice before you go.

Yes, with awareness — it is a popular solo route. Expect more attention than in Western Europe; dress a little modestly, carry yourself confidently, use ride-hailing at night and keep to busy areas after dark.
Do I need to cover up to visit mosques?
Yes — modest dress is required, and women should bring a scarf to cover their head. Shoes come off at the door; many mosques provide wraps to borrow.
How many days do you need in Istanbul?
Three to four days covers the historic peninsula, the bazaars and a Bosphorus cruise without rushing.
