Things to do in Cappadocia

Fairy chimneys, cave hotels and a sky full of balloons

Cappadocia is a surreal moonscape of wind-carved “fairy chimneys”, rock-cut churches and underground cities in central Turkey — and the most famous place on earth to watch the sunrise from a hot-air balloon. Most travellers base in Göreme and give it two or three days. It pairs naturally with Istanbul (a one-hour flight away), which is how most people reach it.

Sunrise hot-air balloon flight

The reason most people come: drifting over the valleys at dawn among hundreds of balloons. Flights are weather-dependent and sell out — book a reputable operator ahead, and build in a spare morning in case yours is cancelled.

How to get to Cappadocia

Fly from Istanbul to Nevşehir (NAV) or Kayseri (ASR) — about 1h15 — then a 45-minute transfer to Göreme; most hotels arrange pick-up. Overnight buses also run from Istanbul (~11 hours) if you want to save a flight.

Best time to visit

April–June and September–October: mild days, clear skies and the best balloon-flying conditions. Summer is hot and busy; winter is magical with snow on the chimneys but flights are cancelled more often.

Cappadocia tips

  • Book your balloon flight before you arrive and choose a morning early in your stay — that way a weather cancellation still leaves you a backup day.
  • Pack layers: dawn is cold even in summer, and you’re up before sunrise for the balloon.
  • A cave hotel in Göreme or Uçhisar puts you walking-distance from the valleys and the best balloon-watching terraces.
