Things to do in Sossusvlei
The world’s highest red dunes, the ghostly Deadvlei pan and dazzling dark skies
A favourite for honeymoons
Sossusvlei is the heart of the Namib — a sea of towering rust-red dunes, among the tallest on earth, surrounding the surreal white clay pan of Deadvlei with its 900-year-old blackened camelthorn trees. Above it all are some of the darkest skies anywhere, which makes stargazing as much of a draw as the dunes. It’s the centrepiece of a Namibia trip, and a bucket-list stop for honeymooners and night-sky lovers alike.

Sossusvlei tips
- Stay inside the Sesriem gate or at a close camp so you can reach Deadvlei at dawn before the day-trippers.
- Bring plenty of water and sun protection for the day, and warm layers for genuinely cold desert nights.
- For the astronomy, choose a dark-sky desert lodge with telescopes or a guided stargazing session — it’s the real magic here.
