Sheer cliffs and waterfalls in New Zealand’s grandest fiord

A favourite for honeymoons

Milford Sound is the jewel of Fiordland — a glacier-carved fiord where sheer cliffs and waterfalls plunge into dark water beneath the pyramid of Mitre Peak. Often called the eighth wonder of the world, it’s New Zealand’s most famous natural sight and the headline day trip from Queenstown, reached by a spectacular alpine road.

Mitre Peak, waterfalls and a cruise through the fiord — a breathtaking, romantic day out.

Time needed

1 long day (from Queenstown) or stay in Te Anau

Don’t miss

A cruise on the fiord

The essential experience: a boat cruise out toward the Tasman Sea beneath Mitre Peak, past Stirling and Bowen Falls, with seals, dolphins and (if you’re lucky) penguins. It rains often here — and that only makes the waterfalls more spectacular.

How to get to Milford Sound

From Queenstown it’s a long but stunning journey — around 4 hours each way by road through Te Anau and the Homer Tunnel. Most visitors take a coach-cruise day tour, or a fly-cruise-fly option that trades the drive for scenic flights.

Best time to visit

Year-round; it’s one of the wettest places on earth, and rain turns the cliffs into a wall of waterfalls. Summer (Dec–Feb) has the longest days and best road conditions; check winter conditions and avalanche closures.

Milford Sound tips

  • A coach-cruise or fly-cruise-fly tour is far easier than the long self-drive — and lets you enjoy the scenery.
  • Don’t be put off by rain — it makes the waterfalls spectacular; bring waterproofs regardless.
  • Book ahead in peak season, fuel up if driving, and allow a full, early-start day.
