Things to do in Loire Valley

Fairytale châteaux and France’s finest wine country

A favourite for honeymoons

The Loire Valley is a UNESCO-listed stretch of river dotted with hundreds of Renaissance châteaux — Chambord, Chenonceau, Amboise — set among vineyards and gardens. It’s France’s romantic château country, an easy day trip or a two-day base from Paris or Tours.

Renaissance châteaux, candlelit cellars and slow river days — quietly romantic château country.

Château de Chambord & Chenonceau

Chambord’s vast turreted roofline and Chenonceau arching gracefully over the river Cher are the two showpieces — many tours pair them with a Loire wine tasting.

How to get to Loire Valley

From Paris it’s ~1 hour by TGV to Tours or St-Pierre-des-Corps, then local trains, tours or a hire car (the châteaux are spread out). Guided day tours from Paris or Tours bundle the big two with a wine tasting.

Best time to visit

May–June and September: gardens in bloom or harvest season, and mild weather for cycling. Some châteaux cut their hours in winter.

Loire Valley tips

  • You need a car, a bike or a guided tour — the châteaux are far apart and rural trains are limited.
  • Pick two or three châteaux, not ten — each deserves a couple of unhurried hours.
  • Pair château visits with a Vouvray or Chinon wine tasting for the full Loire day.
