Things to do in Wadi Shab
Turquoise canyon pools and a hidden waterfall cave
Wadi Shab is Oman’s most beautiful canyon — a ribbon of emerald pools between soaring rock walls, ending in a secret, half-submerged cave with a waterfall you swim to reach. A short boat ride and a scenic 45-minute walk from the car park lead in, making it the standout day trip from Muscat and a highlight of any Oman itinerary.

The walk, swim & the hidden waterfall cave
From the car park a small boat ferries you across the inlet, then it’s a roughly 45-minute walk along the wadi to a series of turquoise pools. The finale is a swim (and a squeeze) through a narrow gap into a cave with a thundering waterfall — bring a dry bag and water shoes.

How to get to Wadi Shab
About a 2-hour drive south-east of Muscat toward Sur — easiest with a hire car, or on a guided day tour from Muscat that usually pairs it with the Bimmah Sinkhole. A small boat (a nominal fee) crosses the inlet at the trailhead.

Best time to visit
October–April, when temperatures are comfortable for the walk and swim. Avoid the fierce summer heat, and never enter the wadi if rain is forecast anywhere upstream — flash floods are a real danger.
Wadi Shab tips
- Wear water shoes and carry your phone and valuables in a dry bag — you swim to the cave.
- Start early to beat both the heat and the midday tour groups.
- Check the forecast: never enter a wadi with any chance of rain upstream.
