A sunrise volcano trek above the clouds in Bali
Mount Batur is Bali’s most popular volcano hike — an accessible active peak in the island’s highlands, climbed in the dark to reach the 1,717m summit for sunrise above the clouds, with the caldera lake and Mount Agung beyond. It’s the island’s classic adventure, easily arranged from Ubud.
Time needed
Half a day (pre-dawn start)
Best time
The dry season (April–October) for the clearest sunrises and safest trails; the wet season often clouds the summit

Sunrise summit trek
Set off around 3–4am with a guide and head-torch to climb through the dark, reaching the crater rim as the sun rises over the caldera, lake and distant peaks — often with eggs cooked in the volcanic steam at the top. Some tours add the nearby hot springs after.
