Saudi Arabia’s Petra — grand Nabataean tombs carved into desert rock
Hegra (also called Madâin Sâlih) is Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site and the southern capital of the Nabataeans, the same civilisation that built Petra. More than 100 monumental tombs are carved into honey-coloured sandstone outcrops rising from the desert, their elaborate façades remarkably preserved — and, unlike Petra, you’ll often have them almost to yourself. It sits within the AlUla region and is visited on official guided tours.
