AlUla Travel Guide

Ancient Nabataean tombs and dramatic desert canyons in Saudi Arabia’s north-west.

AlUla is Saudi Arabia’s flagship heritage destination — a vast desert region of sandstone canyons, palm oases and ancient cities in the country’s north-west. Its centrepiece is Hegra (Madâin Sâlih), the Nabataean sister-city of Petra and Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, alongside the mirrored Maraya concert hall, the mudbrick AlUla Old Town and the towering Elephant Rock. Newly opened to tourism and heavily invested in, it has become one of the Middle East’s most talked-about destinations.

📅 Best time

October–March is the comfortable, cool season and when most events and experiences run (the Winter at Tantora festival falls in this window). Summer is extremely hot and many outdoor activities pause.

💷 Daily budget

$150–350+ a day — accommodation ranges from desert camps to luxury resorts, and headline experiences are premium; it skews upmarket.

🗓️ Ideal length

2–3 days to see Hegra, the Old Town, Elephant Rock and the viewpoints without rushing.

💱 Currency

Saudi Riyal (SAR); cards are widely accepted.

🗣️ Language

Arabic; English is widely used across AlUla’s tourism operation and signage.

Is AlUla safe?

General safety

Very low crime and a heavily managed, tourism-focused destination — day-to-day safety is excellent. The realistic considerations are extreme summer heat, remote desert distances, and respecting local laws and customs. Most sites are visited via official guides and rawis (storytellers).

Solo female travellers

Comfortable and low-hassle in practice — AlUla is a controlled, tourism-oriented area and solo women generally report feeling safe. Saudi Arabia has relaxed many rules (women can drive, and the abaya isn’t mandatory for visitors), but dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and be aware you’re in a conservative country.

LGBTQ+ travellers

Travel informed and be discreet: same-sex relations are criminalised in Saudi Arabia, with severe penalties and no legal protection or public scene. LGBTQ+ travellers do visit AlUla, but any public affection is unwise and carries real legal risk. This is honest awareness, not encouragement — always check your government’s current advice.

AlUla FAQs

Is AlUla the same as Petra?

No — but they’re closely linked. Hegra, AlUla’s star site, was the Nabataeans’ second city, carved in the same style as Petra in Jordan. It’s often called “Saudi Arabia’s Petra,” with grand rock-cut tombs but a fraction of the crowds.

Do you need a visa to visit AlUla?

Most nationalities can get a Saudi tourist e-visa or visa on arrival, which covers AlUla. Always check the latest requirements before you travel, as Saudi entry rules have changed rapidly.

When is the best time to visit AlUla?

October to March, when the desert is cool enough for comfortable sightseeing and the main festival season (including Winter at Tantora) runs. Summer is intensely hot and many outdoor experiences pause.
