Things to do in The Grand Canyon
A mile-deep chasm of layered rock, two billion years in the making
The Grand Canyon is the great natural icon of the American Southwest — a mile-deep, 277-mile-long gorge carved by the Colorado River, its banded cliffs glowing red and gold at sunrise and sunset. The South Rim is the most visited and accessible part, and the whole canyon is a popular trip from Las Vegas.
Time needed
A day trip from Las Vegas, or 1–2 days at the rim
Best time
Spring and autumn for mild temperatures and clear light

Don’t miss
The South Rim viewpoints at sunrise or sunset
Standing at the rim as the light moves across the layered cliffs is the reason to come. Mather Point and Yavapai Point are the classic South Rim overlooks; the rim trail links a string of viewpoints, and even an hour down a trail transforms the sense of scale.

The Grand Canyon tips
- For the iconic views go to the South Rim; the West Rim (closer to Vegas) has the Skywalk but is less dramatic.
- Sunrise and sunset are when the canyon comes alive — stay overnight at the rim if you can.
- Carry far more water than you think on any hike below the rim, and turn back with energy to spare.
