Amsterdam Travel Guide
Canal-ring charm, golden-age art, and Europe’s easiest city to love.
Amsterdam is compact, gorgeous and gloriously easy — gabled houses along a UNESCO canal ring, Vermeers and Van Goghs, and a bike-first calm rare for a capital. Relaxed and English-friendly, it is a brilliant solo, couples or friends city break.

Is Amsterdam safe?
General safety
Very safe overall. The main hazards are practical: watch for bikes and trams when crossing, keep an eye out for pickpockets in the busy centre, and treat the nightlife zones with normal caution.
Solo female travellers
Excellent for solo women — relaxed, walkable and safe day and night in central areas. Standard awareness around the late-night Red Light District crowds is all that’s needed.
LGBTQ+ travellers
Legal and a global pioneer — the first country to legalise same-sex marriage (2001). Exceptionally welcoming, with a visible scene and a famous canal Pride.
Safety guidance is general and can change — always check your government’s latest travel advice before you go.
