Climb the vast pyramids of an ancient city
Teotihuacán is one of the largest and most important ancient cities in the Americas — a UNESCO site of monumental pyramids linked by the long Avenue of the Dead, an hour from Mexico City. The Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon dominate a city that predates the Aztecs, who named it “the place where the gods were created.”

How to get to Teotihuacán
About an hour from Mexico City by car or tour. Public buses run from the Autobuses del Norte terminal; a guided tour or private driver is easiest and often bundles the Basilica of Guadalupe.
Best time to visit
The dry season (November–April) is best. Go at opening to beat both the midday heat and the crowds — there’s very little shade on the site.
Teotihuacán tips
- Arrive at opening — the site is huge, exposed and gets hot and crowded fast.
- Bring water, a hat and sunscreen, and wear proper shoes for the uneven steps.
- The balloon flights launch at dawn — book ahead and pair them with the ruins after.
