It sits in the Yucatán jungle, easily reached from Cancún, Mérida or Valladolid, and is often paired with a cenote swim. Half a day on site.

Don’t miss

El Castillo (the Pyramid of Kukulcán)

The stepped pyramid of Kukulcán dominates the site — and on the spring and autumn equinoxes, the afternoon sun casts a serpent of shadow down its staircase. A guide brings the astronomy and history alive.

How to get to Chichen Itza

It’s in the Yucatán — most reach it from Cancún (~2.5h) or Mérida (~1.5h). From Mexico City it’s a ~2h flight to Cancún or Mérida first. The colonial town of Valladolid is the closest base (~45 min).

Best time to visit

November–April (dry season) for comfortable weather. Arrive at opening (8am) to beat the heat, the crowds and the coach groups from Cancún.

Chichen Itza tips

  • Get there for opening — by late morning the heat and the Cancún coach crowds are intense.
  • Take a guide or audio tour; unlabelled, the ruins lose most of their story.
  • Pair it with a cenote swim and the colonial town of Valladolid for a full, cooler day.
