Emerald waters and thousands of limestone karst islands

A favourite for honeymoons

Halong Bay is a UNESCO seascape of nearly 2,000 limestone islands rising from emerald water — one of Vietnam’s defining sights and the country’s top overnight-cruise destination. Most visitors come from Hanoi on a one- or two-night junk-boat cruise that takes in caves, kayaking and a night moored among the karsts.

Overnight cruise among the karsts

The classic experience: a traditional-style junk boat for one or two nights, sailing between the limestone towers, with kayaking, a cave visit and sunrise tai chi on deck. An overnight beats a rushed day trip and reaches quieter water.

Halong Bay tips

  • Choose your cruise operator carefully — quality varies hugely, so read recent reviews.
  • For fewer crowds, pick a route into Lan Ha Bay or Bai Tu Long Bay rather than the central bay.
  • Build slack into your plans — sailings can be cancelled in bad weather for safety.
