The scene

Taipei’s scene centres on Ximending, where the plaza behind the historic Red House (Ximen Honglou) is ringed with LGBTQ+ bars and cafés — the most visible gay hub in East Asia. The wider city is relaxed and accepting, and the annual Pride is the largest on the continent.

Where to go

  • Ximending — the Red House (Honglou) plaza bars, the main LGBTQ+ hub
  • Café Dalida and the cluster of bars behind the Red House
  • Taiwan Pride (Taipei) each October — Asia’s largest

Where to stay

Ximending puts you in the middle of the scene and nightlife; Da’an and Zhongshan are central, stylish alternatives.

Social climate

Taiwan is the standout in Asia — same-sex marriage has been legal since 2019, anti-discrimination protections are strong, and younger Taipei is openly accepting. Public affection is a little more reserved than in the West (as it is for everyone), but LGBTQ+ visitors are very unlikely to face hostility.

Pride & events

Taiwan Pride is held in Taipei each October and is the largest Pride march in East Asia, regularly drawing well over 100,000 people.

Trans travellers: Taiwan has growing legal recognition and an increasingly visible trans community, though changing one’s legal gender marker has historically involved medical requirements.

Practical tips

  • Same-sex couples can legally marry in Taiwan (since 2019), and hotels won’t blink at a same-sex double booking.
  • Ximending is the heart of the scene and walkable; the Red House plaza bars get going in the evening.
  • Taipei Pride (October) is the region’s biggest — book accommodation early if you’re visiting for it.
