Edinburgh Travel Guide
Scotland’s dramatic capital — a clifftop castle, medieval closes and Georgian elegance.
Edinburgh is one of Europe’s most atmospheric capitals: a brooding castle on a crag, the medieval Old Town’s tangle of closes, and the elegant Georgian New Town below. It’s compact, walkable, famously safe and friendly, and it explodes into the world’s biggest arts festival every August.

Is Edinburgh safe?
General safety
A very safe city by any standard — low crime and easy to navigate. The main thing to manage is ordinary weekend nightlife around the Cowgate and Grassmarket.
Solo female travellers
Excellent for solo women, day and night, across the compact centre. Use standard night-out sense around the Cowgate bar strip and stick to lit, busy streets late — otherwise it’s as easy as solo travel gets.
LGBTQ+ travellers
Very welcoming — same-sex marriage has been legal across the UK since 2014, and Edinburgh has an open scene around the Broughton Street “Pink Triangle,” with a June Pride.
Safety guidance is general and can change — always check your government’s latest travel advice before you go.
