Stonehenge is the world’s most famous prehistoric monument — a ring of colossal standing stones raised on Salisbury Plain some 5,000 years ago, still mysterious in purpose. It’s an easy half-day from London, very often combined with the Roman city of Bath or the medieval village of Lacock.
Time needed
Half a day (or a full day with Bath)

Walk the stone circle
Follow the path around the great sarsen stones with an audio guide, taking in the scale and the alignment with the solstice sunrise. For a rare treat, book a special-access tour that lets you step inside the circle outside normal hours.
