Solo female safety
Edinburgh is a reassuring, easy solo-female city — compact, walkable and friendly, with low crime in the central areas. Walking alone in the evening is normal. The only real thing to manage is ordinary weekend drinking around the Cowgate and Grassmarket nightlife.
Is it safe at night?
The Old Town, New Town and main streets are comfortable after dark. The Cowgate bar strip gets busy and rowdy at closing time — fine with normal sense. Stick to lit, busy routes and you’ll be at ease.
Getting around safely
Very safe and easy — walkable centre, plus trams (including from the airport) and Lothian buses, paid contactless. Use a licensed taxi or app late at night if heading to the outskirts.

Common scams & how to avoid them
Festival-season pickpocketing
August crowds on the Royal Mile draw pickpockets — keep bags zipped during the Fringe.
Overpriced “tartan tat”
Not dangerous, just a wallet risk — touristy Royal Mile shops mark up souvenirs; buy a street or two off.
What to wear & cultural notes
No restrictions at all — just dress for the weather, which changes fast. Bring layers and a waterproof even in summer, and decent shoes for the hills and cobbles.
LGBTQ+ safety
Very welcoming — same-sex marriage has been legal across the UK since 2014, and Edinburgh has an open scene around the Broughton Street “Pink Triangle,” with a June Pride.
Legal status: legal. Same-sex marriage legal since 2014 (England/Wales/Scotland). Strong anti-discrimination protections. London, Manchester, and Brighton are among Europe's most LGBTQ+-welcoming cities.Source: ILGA World 2025

Is Edinburgh safe to walk at night?
Yes — the central areas are comfortable after dark and well-used. The Cowgate bar strip gets rowdy at closing, so apply standard night-out awareness there.
