Brighton Travel Guide
England’s seaside capital of cool — and the unofficial gay capital of the UK.
Brighton is a creative, bohemian beach city an hour from London, known for its pebble beach and pier, independent shops in The Lanes, and a famously open, alternative spirit. It’s widely regarded as the LGBTQ+ capital of the UK, centred on the Kemptown village, and an easy, friendly solo trip.

Is Brighton safe?
General safety
A safe, laid-back city. The main thing to manage is ordinary weekend nightlife rowdiness around West Street and the clubs, plus normal seaside-crowd pickpocketing care.
Solo female travellers
Comfortable and welcoming for solo women, day and night, in the central and seafront areas. Apply standard UK night-out sense around the West Street bar strip at closing time.
LGBTQ+ travellers
As welcoming as it gets in the UK — same-sex marriage has been legal since 2014, and Brighton’s Kemptown is the country’s best-known gay village, with a huge August Pride.
Safety guidance is general and can change — always check your government’s latest travel advice before you go.
