The Great Wall of China stretches thousands of kilometres across northern China, and its most spectacular, accessible sections are a day trip from Beijing. Which section you choose matters more than anything: Mutianyu is the restored, scenic sweet spot with the fewest crowds and the easiest access, while wilder stretches reward keen walkers. Most travellers visit on a day tour or private car from the capital.

Mutianyu is the section most first-timers should pick: beautifully restored, dramatically set over forested hills, far less crowded than Badaling, and served by a cable car and a fun toboggan back down. You can walk between watchtowers at your own pace with the mountains falling away on both sides.

How to get to The Great Wall of China
Most sections are 1.5–2.5 hours from central Beijing. Mutianyu is reachable by a tour, a private car, or public transport (bus to Huairou, then a local shuttle); Badaling has a direct bullet train from Beijing. A guided day tour or private car is the easiest, and lets you choose a quieter section.

September–October for clear skies and comfortable temperatures, and April–May for spring. Summer is hot, humid and busy; winter is cold but strikingly clear and quiet, occasionally with snow on the wall. Go early to beat both the heat and the crowds.

- Go as early in the day as you can — the wall is far quieter and cooler in the morning.
