Solo female safety

Stockholm is calm, orderly and very comfortable solo, with a strong culture of gender equality and excellent English. Walking alone at night in the central areas is normal and safe. The main thing to manage is summer pickpocketing in tourist crowds.

Is it safe at night?

Central Stockholm is safe and pleasant after dark, with reliable late transport. Use ordinary awareness in the busiest nightlife of Stureplan late at night and around the central station, and you’ll be completely comfortable.

Getting around safely

The metro, buses and ferries are clean, safe and easy — tap a contactless card or use the SL app. The artistic metro stations are a sight in themselves. From Arlanda, the Arlanda Express train or a pre-booked transfer is quickest and safe.

Safest areas to stay

  • Gamla Stan (old town)
  • Norrmalm (central)
  • Södermalm
  • Östermalm
  • Djurgården (museum island)

Where to take extra care

  • Around the central station (T-Centralen) late at night for pickpockets/rowdiness
  • Busy summer tourist crowds for petty theft

Common scams & how to avoid them

Summer pickpocketing

In Gamla Stan crowds and on busy public transport. Keep your bag zipped and in front.

Card-skimming at ATMs

Use machines inside banks, and shield your PIN. Sweden is largely cashless, so you’ll rarely need an ATM anyway.

What to wear & cultural notes

No restrictions — dress as you like; Stockholm is stylish and relaxed. Dress warmly in the long winter. The city is almost entirely cashless, so a contactless card or phone is essential — many places don’t take cash at all.

LGBTQ+ safety

Legal and exceptionally welcoming, with marriage equality since 2009 and one of the world’s most progressive societies. Openly comfortable for LGBTQ+ travellers, with a visible scene and a big summer Pride.

Legal status: legal. Same-sex marriage legal since 2009. One of the world's most progressive countries. Stockholm Pride is major annual event.Source: ILGA World 2025
