Seychelles Travel Guide

Sculpted granite boulders, powder-white sand and coco-de-mer forests off East Africa.

The Seychelles is 115 islands scattered in the Indian Ocean, and its beaches are arguably the most beautiful on earth — sweeps of white sand framed by giant weather-sculpted granite boulders and turquoise shallows. Most trips combine three main islands: buzzy Mahé, laid-back Praslin and tiny, car-free La Digue, home to the famous Anse Source d’Argent. It’s a honeymoon icon that also rewards hikers, snorkellers and island-hoppers.

📅 Best time

April–May and October–November are the calm, in-between months with the clearest water and best all-round conditions. June–September is cooler and breezier (great for hiking, choppier seas); December–March is hot, humid and greener with occasional heavy rain.

💷 Daily budget

$200–500+ a day mid-range — Seychelles is a premium destination; self-catering villas, ferries and supermarket meals bring it down from full-board resort prices.

🗓️ Ideal length

7–10 nights to island-hop Mahé, Praslin and La Digue without rushing.

💱 Currency

Seychellois Rupee (SCR); euros and cards are widely accepted at hotels and restaurants.

🗣️ Language

Seychellois Creole, English and French are all official — English is spoken comfortably almost everywhere.

Is Seychelles safe?

General safety

One of the safer places in the region, with little violent crime. The realistic risk is opportunistic theft — break-ins to self-catering villas and thefts from bags left on beaches, mainly on Mahé. Don’t leave valuables unattended and lock up, and you’ll have an easy trip.

Solo female travellers

Relaxed and comfortable for solo women, especially on quiet Praslin and La Digue. Use ordinary caution: avoid isolated beaches and unlit paths after dark, keep an eye on your belongings while swimming, and arrange transport back from remote spots at night rather than walking.

LGBTQ+ travellers

Among the more relaxed Indian Ocean choices: Seychelles decriminalised same-sex relations in 2016, and the atmosphere in tourist areas is easygoing and discreet. There’s no same-sex marriage and no real scene, but same-sex couples honeymoon here comfortably; low-key public behaviour is the social norm for everyone.

Getting around & essentials

Scheduled ferries (Cat Cocos and Inter Island) link Mahé, Praslin and La Digue; small domestic flights connect Mahé and Praslin fast. La Digue is explored by bicycle, Mahé and Praslin by hire car or taxi (drive on the left). Buses on the two big islands are cheap and scenic if slow.

Seychelles FAQs

Are the Seychelles good for a honeymoon?

Exceptionally — the granite-boulder beaches are among the most romantic and photogenic anywhere, with private-island resorts, sunset catamaran cruises and easy island-hopping for two.

Are the Seychelles safe for solo female travellers?

Yes — it’s one of the more comfortable Indian Ocean destinations for solo women. The main risk is opportunistic theft, not personal safety; don’t leave valuables on the beach and avoid isolated spots after dark.

Which Seychelles islands should I visit?

Most people combine three — Mahé (arrival, biggest, most facilities), Praslin (Vallée de Mai and top beaches) and La Digue (car-free, Anse Source d’Argent). Seven to ten nights covers all three nicely.
