Mauritius Travel Guide

Reef-sheltered lagoons, volcanic peaks and a spice-mix culture in the Indian Ocean.

Mauritius rings a volcanic interior of waterfalls, sugar-cane fields and hiking trails with a near-continuous coral reef — so the whole island is fringed by calm, swimmable turquoise lagoons. Add a warm blend of Creole, Indian, Chinese and French culture (and food), a huge range of resorts, and you get the Indian Ocean’s best-value honeymoon and beach holiday — noticeably cheaper than the Maldives or Seychelles for a similar barefoot-luxury feel.

📅 Best time

May–December is cooler, drier and the best all-round window (September–November is prime). January–March is hot and humid with a cyclone risk; the west and north coasts stay calmer and more sheltered year-round.

💷 Daily budget

$100–250 a day mid-range — better value than the Maldives or Seychelles, with everything from guesthouses and self-catering to all-inclusive lagoon resorts.

🗓️ Ideal length

7 nights — a week lets you mix beach time with the waterfalls, hikes and a day in Port Louis.

💱 Currency

Mauritian Rupee (MUR); cards are widely accepted and euros/dollars change easily.

🗣️ Language

English is the official language; French and Mauritian Creole are spoken everywhere day to day, so communication is easy for visitors.

Is Mauritius safe?

General safety

One of Africa’s safest and most stable countries, and an easy first tropical trip. Violent crime against tourists is rare; the realistic risks are petty theft (don’t leave valuables on the beach), strong lagoon currents at a few open passes, and driving on unfamiliar roads.

Solo female travellers

Welcoming and comfortable for solo women, with a gentle, family-friendly feel in resort and coastal areas. Use standard caution — avoid unlit beaches at night, dress a little more modestly away from resorts and in villages, and plan evening transport ahead as public buses stop early.

LGBTQ+ travellers

Among the more welcoming Indian Ocean options: Mauritius decriminalised same-sex relations in 2023, and tourist and resort areas are easygoing. Society is fairly moderate and religiously mixed, so discretion in villages is socially sensible, but same-sex couples holiday and honeymoon here comfortably, and resorts are used to hosting them.

Getting around & essentials

Hiring a car is the best way to explore (drive on the left) — the island is small and the coast road is scenic. Taxis and ride apps cover shorter hops, and public buses are very cheap and characterful but slow and stop by early evening, so book transfers for nights out.

Mauritius FAQs

Is Mauritius good for a honeymoon?

Very — calm swimmable lagoons, a huge choice of romantic resorts, waterfalls and catamaran cruises, and noticeably better value than the Maldives or Seychelles for a similar barefoot-luxury feel.

Yes — it’s one of Africa’s safest countries and an easy solo trip. The main risks are petty theft and lagoon currents, not personal safety; take normal precautions and plan evening transport, as buses stop early.
