Plan my Porto trip

Solo female safety

Porto is calm, friendly and very comfortable solo, with low crime and warm locals. Walking alone at night in the centre is normal. The only things to manage are pickpockets in the busiest tourist spots and the steep, slippery cobbled hills.

Is it safe at night?

The riverside Ribeira and central areas are safe and pleasant after dark, with people about. Use ordinary awareness late around the bar district of Galerias de Paris, and the cobbles are the main hazard — wear shoes with grip.

Getting around safely

The metro, buses and historic trams are clean, cheap and safe; the centre is walkable but hilly. From the airport, the metro (purple line) or a pre-booked transfer is easy and inexpensive.

Safest areas to stay

  • Ribeira (riverfront)
  • Baixa (centre)
  • Cedofeita
  • Foz do Douro
  • Bonfim

Where to take extra care

  • Busy tourist spots and tram 1 for pickpockets
  • Some quiet streets near Campanhã station late at night

Common scams & how to avoid them

Pickpocketing in crowds

Around the Clérigos Tower, São Bento and on tram 1. Keep your bag zipped and in front.

Overpriced port tastings

A few touristy spots inflate prices. Book a reputable cellar tour in Vila Nova de Gaia.

What to wear & cultural notes

No restrictions — wear what you like. Cover shoulders and knees to enter churches (there are many beautiful ones). Comfortable, grippy shoes matter most for the steep, often-wet cobbles.

LGBTQ+ safety

Legal and welcoming, with marriage equality since 2010 and a small, friendly scene. Portugal is among Europe’s more accepting countries, and Porto is comfortable for LGBTQ+ travellers.
