Fiji Travel Guide
Barefoot South Pacific islands — reefs, castaway sandbars and legendary warmth.
Fiji is a scattering of more than 300 islands in the South Pacific, famous for turquoise lagoons, soft-coral diving and some of the warmest hospitality anywhere (you’ll hear “Bula!” constantly). It ranges from castaway backpacker islands in the Yasawas to luxury overwater resorts, all easy to reach from the main island of Viti Levu — a genuinely relaxing, friendly, family- and honeymoon-friendly tropical escape.
Plan my free Fiji itinerary📅 Best time
The dry season (May–October) is the best time — warm, sunny and less humid, with the calmest seas for diving and island-hopping. The wet season (November–April) is hotter and more humid with tropical downpours and a cyclone risk, but it’s greener, cheaper and quieter.
💷 Daily budget
$80–200 mid-range depending on island and resort; backpacker island packages can run much cheaper, luxury far higher.
🗓️ Ideal length
7 days to combine a couple of islands and some diving; 10+ to add the remote Yasawas or a second island group.
💱 Currency
Fijian dollar (FJD). Cards work at resorts; carry cash for local villages, markets and smaller islands.
🗣️ Language
English is an official language and widely spoken, alongside Fijian and Fiji Hindi — very easy for visitors.
Is Fiji safe?
General safety
Fiji is a friendly, generally safe destination with low violent crime, especially within the resorts and islands. The realistic risks are petty theft (secure valuables), strong sun and reef/current conditions when swimming or diving, and driving on rough rural roads. In the wet season, watch cyclone and flood advisories.
Solo female travellers
Solo women generally find Fiji relaxed and welcoming, particularly on resort islands and organised island-hopping routes like the Yasawa Flyer. Use normal caution in downtown Suva and Nadi after dark, dress modestly when visiting traditional villages (cover shoulders and knees), and stick to reputable operators for boats and dives.
LGBTQ+ travellers
Fiji decriminalised same-sex relationships in 2010 and its constitution bans discrimination, but society remains socially conservative and there’s no visible scene, so open displays of affection are uncommon in public. In practice, resorts are welcoming and same-sex couples are looked after discreetly and professionally; a little discretion outside resort areas is wise.
Safety guidance is general and can change — always check your government’s latest travel advice before you go.

Getting around & essentials
Most travel is by boat and small plane. From Nadi, catamarans like the Yasawa Flyer and South Sea cruises reach the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands; resorts arrange transfers. Domestic flights and ferries link the bigger islands. On Viti Levu, taxis (agree fares) and buses cover the coast road.
