Plan my Cape Town tripSolo female safety
Cape Town is spectacular and very rewarding, but it asks for genuine preparation. Crime rates are higher than most destinations in this guide, and opportunistic theft is the main concern. Solo women who use ride-hailing, avoid walking at night, don’t hike alone, and keep valuables hidden generally have a safe, wonderful trip.
Is it safe at night?
Don’t walk after dark — use ride-hailing (Uber/Bolt) door to door, even for short distances. Stick to busy, well-regarded areas like the V&A Waterfront, Sea Point promenade (by day) and the City Bowl restaurant strips. Avoid isolated spots, empty streets and deserted beaches at night.
Getting around safely
Use ride-hailing apps (Uber/Bolt) as your default — cheap, safe and how most visitors get around. Avoid minibus taxis and walking at night. A rental car is excellent for the Cape Peninsula and wine lands by day (keep doors locked, bags out of sight). Pre-book airport transfers.
Safest areas to stay
- V&A Waterfront
- City Bowl (by day)
- Sea Point (promenade by day)
- Camps Bay
- Constantia
- Green Point
Where to take extra care
- Walking anywhere after dark
- Isolated hiking trails (hike in groups)
- The City Bowl’s quiet streets at night
- Deserted beaches and lookouts
Common scams & how to avoid them
Hiking-trail muggings
Isolated trails (including parts of Table Mountain and Lion’s Head) have seen robberies. Hike in a group or with a guide, never alone, and on popular routes only.
ATM "help" / card swap
Decline anyone offering to help at an ATM. Use machines inside malls/banks by day and shield your PIN.
Smash-and-grab at traffic lights
Keep car doors locked and bags out of sight on the seat, especially at junctions.
What to wear & cultural notes
Relaxed and casual — but dress down for safety: leave jewellery and expensive watches behind and keep your phone out of sight on the street. The bigger "dress" issue is the weather — pack layers, as Cape Town can swing from beach heat to cold wind in a day.
LGBTQ+ safety
Legal and the most LGBTQ-friendly destination in Africa — South Africa has marriage equality, and Cape Town has a visible scene around De Waterkant and its own Pride. The city is generally open and welcoming.
Legal status: legal. First country in Africa and fifth globally to legalise same-sex marriage (2006). Strong constitutional protections. Cape Town and Johannesburg have active LGBTQ+ scenes. Rural areas more conservative.Source: ILGA World 2025
