Gay Hong Kong · Central
Gay Central & SoHo: Hong Kong’s LGBTQ+ quarter
Hong Kong doesn’t have a single defined gay village — its LGBTQ+ nightlife concentrates in Central, especially the bar-lined lanes of SoHo around Hollywood Road and the Mid-Levels escalator, with more venues scattered through Wan Chai. Same-sex relations are legal and the city has an established, if relatively low-key, scene.
Central — and the bar lanes of SoHo — is the main hub of LGBTQ+ Hong Kong; the scene is established but lower-key and spread out, and same-sex marriage isn’t recognised.
The story
Hong Kong decriminalised same-sex relations in 1991, and a gay scene developed in Central. In 2023 the Court of Final Appeal ruled that the government must establish a framework recognising same-sex partnerships, though full marriage is still not recognised. The social climate is more reserved than in many Western cities, and visibility has been more cautious following recent political changes.
The scene
Rather than one strip, the scene spreads across Central’s SoHo — the lanes around Hollywood Road and Staunton Street, by the Mid-Levels escalator — with a mix of gay and mixed bars, plus more venues in Wan Chai. It’s stylish and international but lower-key than the big Western gay districts.

The Hong Kong Pride Parade is usually held in autumn (around November), and the “Pink Season” runs a programme of LGBTQ+ events across the same months.
