Gay Paris · 3rd & 4th arrondissement
Gay Le Marais: Paris’s LGBTQ+ quarter
Le Marais is Paris’s most famous gay neighbourhood — a maze of medieval streets across the 3rd and 4th arrondissements that has been the centre of LGBTQ+ life in the city since the 1980s. Beyond the bars it’s one of Paris’s most beautiful districts: Renaissance mansions, boutiques, falafel counters and the arcaded Place des Vosges.
Yes — Le Marais is the heart of gay Paris and one of Europe’s most welcoming LGBTQ+ neighbourhoods, centred on Rue Sainte-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie and Rue des Archives.
The story
Le Marais became the centre of gay Paris from the 1980s, when bars and bookshops opened around Rue Sainte-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie. Once an aristocratic quarter — and still partly the historic Jewish district around Rue des Rosiers — it is now an effortless mix of gay bars, designer boutiques and falafel joints. France legalised same-sex marriage in 2013.
The scene
The scene clusters on Rue Sainte-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie and Rue des Archives, a dense run of bars and cafés that spill onto the pavements. It is social and visible rather than club-heavy; the bigger clubs are spread elsewhere across Paris.
- Rue Sainte-Croix-de-la-Bretonnerie — the main bar street
- Rue des Archives — café and bar terraces
- The long-running Open Café and Le Cox terraces
- Les Mots à la Bouche — the historic LGBTQ+ bookshop
Where to stay in Le Marais
Staying in Le Marais itself (3rd/4th) puts you in the scene and within walking distance of Notre-Dame, the Pompidou Centre and the Île Saint-Louis.
Pride & events
Paris Pride (Marche des Fiertés) takes place in late June and winds through the city; Le Marais is the year-round hub.
Know before you go
- France has had same-sex marriage since 2013; Paris is openly accepting and public affection is unremarkable in Le Marais.
- The scene is bar-and-terrace focused — the big clubs are spread across other parts of Paris.
- Le Marais is also the historic Jewish quarter (Rue des Rosiers) — a great spot for falafel between bars.
