Gay Athens · Gazi–Kerameikos
Gay Gazi: Athens’s LGBTQ+ quarter
Gazi, around the old gasworks turned Technopolis cultural centre, is the centre of LGBTQ+ Athens — a former industrial district that became the city’s main nightlife and gay hub, its bars clustered near Kerameikos metro a short walk from the ancient cemetery and the Acropolis. In 2024 Greece became the first Orthodox-majority country to legalise same-sex marriage.
Yes — Gazi, around Kerameikos, is the heart of gay Athens, in the first Orthodox-majority country to legalise same-sex marriage (2024).
The story
Gazi takes its name from the 19th-century gasworks that now house the Technopolis arts complex. After the Kerameikos metro station opened in 2007 the district boomed into Athens’ main nightlife quarter, with its gay bars and clubs at the centre of the scene. Greece recognised civil partnerships in 2015 and, in 2024, became the first Orthodox-majority country to legalise same-sex marriage.
The scene
The scene clusters around Gazi’s central square by Kerameikos metro and the streets running off it — Persefonis, Triptolemou and around — a sociable mix of gay and mixed bars and clubs that get going late. Long-running spots include Sodade and S-cape; the area blends into the wider Gazi–Kerameikos nightlife.
