Gay Gaixample: Barcelona’s LGBTQ+ quarter
The “Gaixample” — a play on “gay” and the Eixample district — is the heart of LGBTQ+ Barcelona, a cluster of bars, clubs, hotels and shops in the left (Esquerra) Eixample around Carrer del Consell de Cent. Spain is one of the world’s most gay-friendly countries, and Barcelona pairs an easy, open city scene with the famous gay beach resort of Sitges just down the coast.
Yes — the Gaixample, in the left Eixample around Carrer del Consell de Cent, is the buzzing heart of gay Barcelona, in one of the world’s most LGBTQ+-friendly countries.
The story
As Spain liberalised after the Franco era and especially after it legalised same-sex marriage in 2005 — among the first countries in the world to do so — the left Eixample developed into Barcelona’s gay quarter, earning the “Gaixample” nickname. The nearby coastal town of Sitges has been an international gay resort for decades.
The scene
The scene centres on Carrer del Consell de Cent and the streets around it — Carrer de Muntaner, Casanova and Aribau — with a dense mix of bars, cafés and clubs in the grid of the Eixample. It’s sociable and stylish, busy from late evening, and the international Circuit Festival each August is one of the world’s largest gay events.
- Carrer del Consell de Cent — the main bar-and-club street
- Carrer de Muntaner and Casanova — more venues across the Gaixample
- The cluster of gay-friendly hotels in the left Eixample
- Day trip to Sitges — the famous gay beach town down the coast
Where to stay in Gaixample
The left Eixample puts you in the scene and walking distance of Gaudí’s Casa Batlló and La Pedrera, with easy metro access to the Old Town and beach; it’s central and well-served by gay-friendly hotels.
Pride & events
Pride Barcelona takes place in summer (June/July), and the international Circuit Festival each August draws a huge global crowd; Sitges adds its own Pride and carnival.
