Gay Church-Wellesley Village: Toronto’s LGBTQ+ quarter
The Church-Wellesley Village — usually just “the Village” — is the heart of LGBTQ+ Toronto and the largest gay village in Canada, centred on Church Street between Wellesley and Carlton. Rainbow crosswalks, the 519 community centre and a dense run of bars and patios make it the focus of one of the world’s biggest Prides.
Yes — the Church-Wellesley Village, along Church Street, is the heart of gay Toronto and the largest gay village in Canada, in a country with same-sex marriage since 2005.
The story
The blocks around Church and Wellesley grew into Toronto’s gay village from the 1970s and ’80s, and by the turn of the century it was the largest in Canada, anchored by the community-run 519 centre on Church Street. Canada legalised same-sex marriage nationwide in 2005 — among the first countries in the world — and the Village remains the community’s civic and social heart.
The scene
Church Street is the spine, lined with bars, patios and cafés that spill onto the pavement in summer. Long-running institutions include the multi-floor Woody’s (familiar from the US Queer as Folk, which filmed here) and the drag bar Crews & Tangos, alongside Glad Day Bookshop, one of the oldest LGBTQ+ bookstores in the world.
