Gay Chueca: Madrid’s LGBTQ+ quarter
Chueca is the heart of gay Madrid — a central barrio around Plaza de Chueca that transformed from a run-down quarter in the 1980s–90s into one of Europe’s most vibrant and openly proud LGBTQ+ neighbourhoods. It’s a buzzing mix of bars, terraces, boutiques and brunch spots, and the epicentre of Madrid’s enormous Pride.
Yes — Chueca is the vibrant, openly proud centre of LGBTQ+ Madrid, and Spain is one of the world’s most gay-friendly countries.
The story
Once a neglected central district, Chueca was revitalised from the late 1980s by the LGBTQ+ community, who opened bars and businesses around Plaza de Chueca. Spain legalised same-sex marriage in 2005 — among the first countries to do so — and Chueca became the symbolic home of a now world-leading scene.
The scene
The action centres on Plaza de Chueca and the surrounding streets — Calle de Pelayo, Calle de Hortaleza and Calle Gravina — with a dense, sociable spread of bars, cafés and clubs. It’s lively day and night, with terraces packed at aperitivo hour.
- Plaza de Chueca — the central square and its terraces
- Calle de Pelayo and Calle de Hortaleza — bar-lined streets
- Calle Gravina — café and bar terraces
- The Mercado de San Antón food market
