Vienna Travel Guide

Imperial palaces, coffee houses and the city of music.

Vienna is the elegant former heart of the Habsburg Empire — grand palaces, world-class museums, gilded concert halls and a beloved coffee-house culture, consistently ranked among the world’s most liveable cities. It’s stately but lively, exceptionally safe and walkable, and a brilliant year-round city break.

Is Vienna safe?

General safety

One of the safest capitals in the world — very low crime, clean and orderly, with reliable transport day and night.

Solo female travellers

Excellent for solo women — comfortable day and night, with superb public transport and a relaxed culture. Standard city awareness around nightlife and the main station is enough.

LGBTQ+ travellers

Very LGBTQ-welcoming — same-sex marriage is legal, protections are strong, and Vienna has an open scene and a huge Pride, the Regenbogenparade.

Best areas to stay in Vienna

Vienna’s districts spiral out by number from the Innere Stadt (1st); visitors mostly stay in the low single digits, all well-linked by tram and U-Bahn.

Each area opens a hotel map comparing Booking.com, Expedia, Agoda, Hotels.com and more.

Getting around & essentials

The U-Bahn, trams and buses are excellent and run late (the U-Bahn is 24h at weekends); get a 24/48/72-hour pass. From the airport, the CAT or S-Bahn train reaches the centre; the historic centre is very walkable.
